History copo
Since 1955, NHRA Stock Eliminator has become the proving ground straight line for the fastest car out of Detroit. In Stock Eliminator, there are many classes, all determined by the weight ratio of delivery vehicles and factors assigned horsepower. Due to tight competition monitored set of rules and historically brutal, Stock Eliminator is the ultimate test for factory muscle car.
In the Sixties, COPO is an acronym for Central Office Production Order, in particular for the Chevrolet vehicle program. Although usually used to order a fleet of trucks and cars owned company, was manipulated by some of the performance-minded dealers to order vehicles with engines larger than that available in the regular production model - most with a view to getting them for Stock Eliminator racer.
From the Water "Fuelie" Bel '57 to '62 409 Impala and muscle cars are countless who came later, Chevrolet has enjoyed a position, long dominant in this category sportsman drag racing. No cars, however, has dominated the track and folklore legendary muscle cars like the Camaro COPO produced in 1969.
The Camaro COPO opened the NHRA rule book to some combination of interest for the Camaro, Chevrolet helps keep at the top of the ultra-competitive forms of motorsports. In fact, they are not only competitive in the NHRA Stock Eliminator when new, but still held the national ET and MPH records in several classes.
By pushing the Chevrolet Central Office Production Order to limit special-order program, a number of dealers can get the 427-cubic-inch big-block engines installed in some of the Camaro, when the largest official machinery available is 396. Two versions of the 427 engine was wrangled out of the factory: COPO 9561 was based Corvette L-72 edition with an iron cylinder block and COPO 9560 ZL1 engine was racing designed with a lightweight aluminum cylinder block.
